Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child try before committing to join?

ABSOLUTELY. We encourage all prospective members to try Scouting for up to three weeks before deciding whether they would like to join. Please contact our Group Leader, Terri Verberne, to arrange your child’s obligation-free trial. Terri can be contacted on 9725 3910 or 0412 964 454.

How much does it cost?

The Scout financial year is the 1st July to 30th June. As an indication, membership for this period costs approximately $340. Members joining throughout the year are charged a pro rata fee. 3rd Ringwood East Scout Group offers fundraising opportunities to defray the cost of fees, and payment by installment can be arranged. Discounts apply to second and subsequent siblings, and to the children of 3rd Ringwood East Leaders.

Isn't Scouts just for boys?

No way! Girls were welcomed into Scouts Australia’s programs in 1971 and now make up approximately 50% of our youth members.

What training do Leaders undertake?

All Leaders have a Working With Children card, a National Police Check, and undergo a reference check and interview process before acceptance as a Leader. In their first 12 months as Leaders, they undertake accredited modules that cover topics such as leadership, workplace health and safety, child-safe Scouting, outdoors and environment, and organizational management. Leaders are then encouraged to complete their advanced training and First Aid qualifications.

What extra opportunites are there within Scouting?

The sky’s the limit! All members can access heaps of age-appropriate activities. From adventurous activities delivered by fully qualified instructors, to performing arts and stagecraft, and even travelling or working overseas on exchange or for a camp are all possibilities within Scouting. For Venturers (15-17 year olds) completion of your badgework can count as a VET qualification, and accredited training courses for adolescents and adults will look great on your resumé.

How can parents get involved?

Scouting can be great fun for parents too! Many Leaders join because of their child’s involvement, and often stay after their child has moved on. Parental involvement can include helping out on a Section night, attending a camp/hike, joining the Group committee or helping at working bees. Leaders are always on the lookout for parents who can come along and share their skills at a section night (eg. carpentry, sewing, pet care, IT).
