Meet the Cub Scout Leaders

Lockie Porteous (Akela)

Lockie was a Venturer and Rover in Lower Templestowe until he was “booted” from Rovers when he turned 26.Lockie joined as a Cub Scout leader in early 2016 and has recently taken over the reins from Pat as the Pack Akela. Pat King (Hathi)

As the son of a Scout Leader I often tagged along on activities and could not wait to become a cub. I joined the 1st Ferny Creek Cub Pack in November 1987 and enjoyed it thoroughly with the exception of freezing my knees off through the mountains winter (there was a strict no long pants rule in place). I progressed through to scouts, became a Patrol Leader and built what I feel is the foundation of all I have learned since. Self Reliance, Helping Others and an almost unhealthy obsession with knots has marked me as a "scouting tragic" throughout my life. I have two daughters who are both in 3rd Ringwood East Scout Group and are responsible for dragging me back in. I place a very high value on practical skills and my favourite programs have been our "Making" nights where the cubs are let loose at a pile of wood offcuts armed with a selection of hand tools. I never expected that the role of Cub Leader would be as challenging or as rewarding as it has proved to be.

Ian Wake (Dingo / Baloo)

Ian was a Cub when he was younger, and rejoined the movement in 2009 when his daughter became a Joey. He was a Cub Leader for three years, before moving to the Joey section in 2012. Ian received his Special Service award for Scouting leadership in 2014. He currently works as a DMR Coordinator / Material Planner at Kenworth Trucks. Ian enjoys spending time with his wife and his three awesome kids, and particularly going on holidays in their caravan.

Kari-Lise Nettleton (Mang)

Darren Wright (Bagheera/Tassie)

Darren started off as a Parent Helper in 2011 when he signed up as Camp Cook for Cuboree 2011. He then joined up as a Cub Scout leader in 2013 and hasn’t looked back. Darren has now been to 3 Cuborees and enjoys all aspects of the Cub program. He also helps out at Joeys two weeks in every month and recently chose Tassie as his Joey leader name. Darren was awarded a Special Service Award in 2018 and has a son and daughter in the Group.

John Uren (Rikki)

John became a leader in unusual circumstances. He contacted Terri, the Group Leader, in 2015 enquiring about Cubs for his son. Upon learning that there was a long waiting list for Cubs at that time, he asked “Is this due to a shortage of leaders? Would it help if I signed up as a leader?” Music to a G/L’s ears!! John is a very enthusiastic and encouraging leader with great attention to detail. John has a son in Scouts and a daughter in Cubs.

Meet the Scout Leaders

Stephen Walsh

Steve joined as a 3RE Scout Leader in 2005, when his sons became involved with the Group. He was a Cub, Scout and Venturer when he was younger, finishing up in 1975 as his group didn't have a Rover section. He remained involved however, particularly in the running of the Armstrong 500 hike. During this time, he achieved his Queen Scout Award, the highest award a Venturer can achieve. As a Leader, he has received his Meritorious Service Award. Steve has attended four Jamborees and was the Troop Leader for AJ2013 & AJ2016. Matt Walsh.jpg

Matt Walsh

Matt was a Cub, Scout and Venturer before taking a break from Scouting. He returned as an Adult Helper in 2017 to assist his dad, Steve, in the Scout troop. Matt is also hoping to generate sufficient interest from prospective members to re-open the Group’s Rover section.
